| 内容記述 | 日本の学校教育での英語教育のあり方を文化とコミュニケーションの観点から論じる。これまでの英語教育論が、学習者が暮らす言語共同体の文化的背景とコミュニケーション上の背景を考慮されずに論じられてきたからである。まず、文化の定義にあたり、一般文化が高等文化の土台となる基本文化であるとし、一般文化の特徴とその構成要素を指摘する。次に、コミュニケーションの定義にあたり、コミュニケーションの構成要素が文化の構成要素と一致し、文化とコミュニケーションには不可分な共生関係があること、母語によるコミュニケーション行動は、その文化に基づいて行われること、母語によるコミュニケーション能力の習得は、その文化の獲得と共になされることを指摘する。 以上のことを踏まえ、例えば、アメリカで長年生活することによって英語・アメリカ文化の枠組みを形成し、二文化二言語併用者にならない限り、日本のようなEFL 環境では英語圏文化の獲得も母語英語の習得も不可能であると指摘する。次に、少なくともEFL 環境で英語の上達を目指すためには、日本語・日本文化を活用した英語の学習と使用を行うこと、外国語と国際語の混同をやめ、英語を国際語として教えることを提案する。 |

| 内容記述 | This paper considers how English language education in Japanese classrooms should be viewed from the standpoint of culture and communication. We fi rst discuss how “small c” culture underlies “large C” culture, and identify the features of the former. Then we examine how the constituents of culture and communication, inextricably linked, correspond to each other, how mother tongue communication is conducted based on culture, and how mother tongue communicative competence is acquired along with culture. In light of the above, we suggest that, in an EFL situation like that of Japan, it is virtually impossible to thoroughly grasp English language culture or acquire native speaker level English because we cannot become bicultural bilinguals in an EFL setting. Lastly, we suggest that, in order to achieve English language profi ciency in the EFL situation, we should learn and use English in conjunction with Japanese language and culture. Finally, we conclude that English should be taught, learned and used as an international language, not as a foreign language. |
