Each type of text has its own conventional structure, and based on a good knowledge of this, skilled readers process the text using appropriate reading strategies. This perspective has been generally neglected in second language (L2) reading instruction in Japan. In this paper, previous studies into L2 reading comprehension focusing on text type regarding a learner’s L2 ability, the topic of a text, and background knowledge are reviewed. Indications are that there tend to be variances in an L2 learner’s reading ability in accordance with text type, and that the same reading ability level tends to be shown when a learner reads materials of the same type. Strategy training specific to each text type should therefore be emphasized more in the classroom, while considering learners’ L2 ability.
