Because the subjunctive mood has no counterpart in Japanese, it and one of its usages, the as-if subjunctive clause, are among the most difficult grammatical items for Japanese learners of English, especially high school students learning them for the first time.\nAccordingly, we arrange some target usages of the subjunctive mood and the as-if subjunctive clause progressively so that they can be as easily understood as possible.
